Who calls us for a storage unit cleanout

What we haul out of storage units

Most storage units hold the same things a garage or spare room does, just packed tighter. Typical loads include:

Hazardous materials such as paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fuel and propane tanks need special handling. Jacksonville residents can take those to the city’s household hazardous waste drop-off. If you are not sure about an item, ask us when you book. Our guide to what a junk removal company can take covers the common questions.

How a storage unit cleanout works

  1. Send us a photo. Open the door and take a picture from the front of the unit. Tell us the unit size (for example 5×10, 10×10 or 10×20), the facility, and whether it is drive-up, interior or on an upper floor.
  2. Get an exact quote. We quote based on how much is in the unit and how hard it is to reach. You approve the price before we start loading.
  3. Pick a day. Choose a time Monday through Saturday that works with the facility’s access hours.
  4. We load and haul. Our crew carries everything out, loads it and hauls it away. Anything you want to keep, set aside or mark before we arrive.
  5. Turn in the unit. Once it is empty, you can check out with the facility office.

Before cleanout day: a facility checklist

Storage facilities each have their own rules. A few minutes with the office before cleanout day avoids surprises:

Keep, donate or haul: sorting before we arrive

The fastest cleanouts happen when the decisions are made first. Walk the unit, or ask a family member to, and sort into three groups: things to keep, things you would like to donate, and everything else. Move keepers to one side of the unit or label them clearly. If you have items you would like donated, tell us when you book and ask about donation options. Everything left in the unit on cleanout day is treated as haul-away.

Clearing a unit as part of a move? Our moving cleanout guide has a room-by-room list, and the storage unit cleanout guide on our blog walks through emptying a unit in one trip.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a storage unit cleanout cost?

It depends on how full the unit is, what is in it and how easy it is to reach. Send a photo from the door with the unit size and facility, and call or text (833) 586-5255 for an exact quote. You approve the price before we load.

Do I need to be at the storage facility during the cleanout?

Someone has to provide access to the facility and open the unit. Ask the facility office how they handle vendor access, and tell us when you book how access will work so we can plan the visit.

Can you empty a storage unit in one trip?

Most standard units can be cleared in a single visit. Very large or tightly packed units may take longer. A photo of the unit helps us plan the right crew and truck space.

Can I leave things in the storage facility dumpster?

Most facilities do not allow it, and many charge a fee for items left in the unit or around the dumpster. Check your rental agreement. We haul everything you do not want to keep.

Can you clear a unit for a family member who has passed away?

Yes. Before cleanout day, make sure the person on the account or the estate’s representative has arranged access with the facility. Set aside anything the family wants to keep and we haul the rest.
